'The Spice of Life'

 'The Spice of Life'.

In November and December of 2017 Art Works took part in the SPARK Festival of South Asian Art. SPARK was part of Utsav - Birmingham City Council’s Year of South Asian Arts
The Festival was two weeks of films, music, arts, crafts, street art, theatre, poetry, food provided by a mixture of Six Birmingham community and  arts organisations either based in and/or working with a range of communities from Sparkhill or Sparkbrook areas.
The Festival offered a number of events designed with and by local people, that give a flavour of the rich diversity of arts activities influenced by South Asian Arts in this bustling part of Birmingham.
Over a period of ten weeks we worked with a variety of groups from the

  • Springfield Project, Creative and Welcome groups
  • Friends of Sparkhill Park
  • The Forest School and St John’s School
  • Azadi Glue

All groups contributed towards the building of the ‘Spice Cart’, a piece of processional art that was used in the performance on 2nd December 2017

We engaged the local community in a variety of craft activities prior to the performance which encompassed stories, music, performances and the craft items produced earlier in the afternoon.

Supported by 10 artists from diverse backgrounds this celebratory event was titled 'The Spice of Life'.

Participants had the opportunity to have their senses tantalised by music, food, performance and colour through the workshops, performance and food.
